On the path of music, dances and tabià

You can still hear the sound of the accordion of those who came to Malga Peniola in May on a pilgrimage to the church of San Giovanni and its festival. We danced until late at night...

A walk that enters the heart of the history of mountain people, where the sacred celebrated the profane and vice versa, in a mix of effort and a hymn to fertility. Penìa is the name with which the people of Moena call the area: here the tabià, the ancient wooden barns, act as a postcard. Malga Peniola is one of the few remaining restaurants where you can taste the traditional fortaie and the fragrant apple fritters. A precious place, chosen as the location for the latest work by director Carlo Mazzacurati, "The Chair of Happiness". Next to the Malga, the small church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno still retains the echo of the accordions that on May 16th made the pilgrims who came here for the festival dance until late at night. The building was built between 1729 and 1732 by the Donei family as thanks to the saint, protector of water and floods, for having survived a heavy flood. Inside there are works by the painter priest Martino Gabrielli.

Direction to follow

Winter walk from Moena to Penia (n. 12)

From Piaz de Sotegrava you head towards the church of San Vigilio. First go along Strada C. Dellantonio, and then go up the alley closed to traffic, called "Troi de Sèn Vile". Keeping right at the crossroads, you will soon rejoin the main road that goes up to the hamlet of Sorte. Alternatively, behind the cemetery, follow the small road that vertically cuts through Prato di Sorte (Pra de Sort). In the middle, the capital of San Marco stands out, frescoed on four sides, and the "Busa Vana", a large depression in the ground in the shape of a sieve ("van" in Ladin). Just beyond the small church of San Giuseppe with its onion-shaped bell tower, you face the narrow curve and continue on Strada de Sort which climbs steeply, especially in the last stretch, up to the Malga Panna restaurant. The walk now alternates flat sections with short ramps, following the slopes of Cima da Ciamp with wide hairpin bends. The Vaia storm of 2018 left clear signs of its passage, however offering an exceptional panoramic view towards Soraga and the upper Val di Fassa. For geology enthusiasts, the route runs alongside fragile Werfen formations, sedimentary rocks formed near the mouths of ancient rivers that flowed into the marine basin that made up the valley. Ignore the crossroads on the right for "Prà Compert" and "Cima da Ciamp" (trail sign no. 517) and continue to reach in a few minutes a splendid clearing where the small church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno and Malga Peniola, a characteristic bar-restaurant located in an ancient Ladin house.

Return along the same route.
