The path of the Austrians

The Austrian Way
Interesting secured trail along the paths used during the Great War. Along the way you have a beautiful view of the Presanella group, the Adamello and the Ortles Alps.

From Malga Valbiolo you reach the Sella and the öst summit of Monte Tonale (SAT 111/161), where the Sentiero degli Austriaci (österreichisch-ungarischer Kriegspfad) begins, which leads to Torrione d‘Albiolo. The trail is quite easy at first, but becomes more and more challenging. The path is covered with war testimonies. If you take up the path to Torrione, you can admire concrete steps, artillery emplacements, connecting tunnels and traces of the mountain station of a cable car. From the summit, descend in a westerly direction to the fork that leads to the Pezzo Valley, from where you can continue along the Sentiero degli Alpini (secured, some exposed sections without chains) or the path towards Passo dei Contrabbandieri (easier alternative). You reach the lakes by passing the Montozzo fork and the Bozzi hut. At the pass, follow path no. 111 (which joins the Sentiero della Pace) and return to Malga Valbiolo.
