To the medieval pilgrim sanctuary of Fassa

From the center of Vigo to the ancient sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Val di Fassa, Santa Giuliana, which has always been a pilgrimage destination even from the nearby valleys.

A walk that takes you from the heart of one of the most beautiful villages in Italy to the "Ciaslir de Vich", the castle where one of the first Rhaetian settlements in the valley was built. It is precisely here, where a prehistoric place of worship already existed, that the nucleus of the most representative church in the entire valley, consecrated to Santa Giuliana, was built in 1237, then expanded in 1519. In honor of her saint, patron saint of Fassa, who paid with her life for her refusal to marry a pagan noble, a great religious and popular festival is celebrated on 16 February. The apse with the frescoes and the central wooden altar, the sacristy and the two-order bell tower retain their original forms. As evidence of the pilgrimages for which the sanctuary was a destination for centuries, many benches remain scattered in the surrounding larch forest where it is possible to stop and breathe in the soul of the place, made up of art, history and hopes.

Direction to follow

Walk from Vigo to Santa Giuliana (n. 31)

From the central square of Vigo (Piaz de Vich), go up Strada de Piz to the covered fountain, then continue straight on Strada de Sent'Uiana which you follow for about twenty metres. Take the avenue on the left that cuts obliquely through the meadow and then goes up again and goes around the grassy slope at the edge of a wooded strip. The trail now follows the undulating course of the pastures until it reaches the entrance to the Great War cemetery with the majestic bell of the Madonna "Queen of Peace" guarding it. The cemetery contains the bodies of 663 fallen from all the countries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The dirt path, which in the last stretch widens to become a paved road, leads to the surrounding wall of the sanctuary, one of the buildings richest in history in the entire Val di Fassa.

Next to the temple of Santa Giuliana, you can admire two other sacred buildings: the chapel dedicated to San Maurizio, dating back to 1489 but mentioned in some documents from 1287, and an old aedicule also dedicated to the patron saint of Fassa. From the hill behind the church, continue on an easy dirt road until you cross the path coming from Valongia. Continue downhill. Once you reach the first houses, the street takes the name of Strada de Pontac and then merges with Strada Rezia. Turning left, follow the latter and arrive at the starting point.

Alternatively, go up the entire Strada de Sent'Uiana to the edge of the meadows. Go around the last house upstream on the left. Turn left and, after a short distance, cross the ski slope. You enter the grove by going up the paved road that leads to the church.
