Excursion to the Sella Group – Sellaronda

Beautiful excursion, which allows you to reach the highest peak of the Sella, at 3152 meters.

Unlike other Dolomite groups, the Sella it is not characterized by numerous pinnacles, towers and spiers: it rather resembles a set of gigantic fortresses with very high walls, characterized by a large ledge halfway up which encircles the entire massif. The highest peak is Piz Boé, 3152 m.
It is delimited by Sella Pass to the west, from the Gardena Pass to the north, from the Campolongo Pass and the Pordoi Pass to the east.
The Fassa valleys to the south, Gardena and Badia to the north, Val Cordevole to the east.

The Pordoi Pass, together with the Sella, Campolongo and Pordoi passes, are the stages of the famous "Sella Ronda”, the circumnavigation of the massif, accessible by car or on foot in summer, and with lifts and skis in winter. Each pass can be a starting point for excursions, not only to the Sella group but also to the surrounding mountains.

The great crossing of the Sella Group.

From Passo Pordoi (2242 m) take the Sass Pordoi cable car (2952 m). If desired, it is possible to climb the steep and uneven Pordoi pass on foot (nr 627, EE, 1.30 hours).

Thus, in a few minutes, you arrive in a unique and evocative environment, an authentic rock desert, crossed by spectacular canyons bordered by steep and jagged walls. After a brief panoramic stop, you descend for about ten minutes to the Pordoi pass and the refuge of the same name (2848 m). Continue along path no. 627 until you reach a crossroads with signs. Following the signs, Piz Boè and Piz Fassa, you reach the base of the summit pyramid via scree and rocky sections. Continue on easy rocks, with some short exposed stretches, up to the summit and the Piz Fassa refuge (3152 m).
A steep descent leads to an exposed ledge (fixed ropes) and a gully, often frozen. A steep scree slope, downhill, leads to the plateau of the Boè refuge (2873 m). Now follow trail sign no. 666/647 along scree fields and snowfields, in the direction of the Antersàss pass, up to the edge of the plateau, at an altitude of 2966 m and, continuing along steep scree fields, you reach a step that can be climbed with metal ropes (be careful, slippery rocks). You descend along the steep Pissadù valley at the bottom of which there is a small lake and the refuge of the same name (2587 m). Following the signs (nr 666), you walk up to the rocky cliff that delimits the rocky carving of Val Setùs.

Steeply descending, with metal ropes and rungs, you descend along the steep gully, often covered in snow even in late summer. At the end of the fork, continue, with some ups and downs, towards Passo Gardena, admiring the jagged Cir group.
