Discovering the flora of the Dolomites: rare flowers to observe

The Dolomites are not only a paradise for trekking lovers, but also a true botanical treasure chest that hosts some of the rarest and most fascinating floral species in Europe. Among the enchanted valleys of Val di Fassa, Val di Sole, Val di Non and Madonna di Campiglio, every excursion can turn into a surprising naturalistic adventure.

In this article we take you to discover some unique flowers that you can find along the paths, with some advice on where and when to observe them.

Edelweiss and botanical rarities: flowers not to be missed

Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum)

Symbol of the mountains, the edelweiss grows between 1.800 and 2.500 meters. You can find it in the high-altitude pastures above the Val di Fassa and on the Sella Group. Remember that it is a protected species: admire it yes, pick it no!

Ferrugineous rhododendron (Rhododendron ferrugineum)

The “flower of the Alps” colors the slopes pink between June and July. In Val di Sole, the coniferous forests are tinged with a thousand shades when the rhododendrons are in full bloom: a true spectacle for the eyes (and for the camera!).

Blackthorn (Gymnadenia nigra)

Also called “black orchid”, nigritella gives off a very sweet scent reminiscent of vanilla. It is found in particular among the sunny meadows of Val di Non, often in rarely traveled areas.

Gentian (Gentiana acaulis)

Its deep blue flowers dot the alpine pastures in spring and early summer. The Madonna di Campiglio area, near the alpine lakes, is perfect for observing it during walks.

Alpine Soldanella (Soldanella alpina)

Among the first flowers to appear after the snow melts, the soldanella announces the arrival of spring. It can be observed especially in the humid meadows of Val di Sole and around the paths that lead up to the refuges.

Where and when to observe alpine flora

  • Spring (late April – June): ideal period for soldanellas and early gentians.
  • Summer (June – August): explosion of rhododendrons, edelweiss and orchids.
  • Recommended locations:
    • Val di Fassa: Viel dal Pan trail, San Pellegrino area
    • Val di Sole: Stelvio National Park, Doss dei Gembri trail
    • Val di Non: Predaia Plateau
    • Madonna di Campiglio: excursion to the Cornisello Lakes

Tips for photographing flowers in the mountains

  • Choose early morning or sunset for softer light.
  • Use a macro lens or a macro function on your smartphone.
  • Avoid trampling on the surrounding environment: each flower is part of a delicate ecosystem.
